The Roman legionary was the heavy infantry of the Roman army who served a strong purpose of spreading the Roman culture among conquered regions. At the height of Roman power, the legionary were seen as the foremost fighting force in the entire world. Although the legionary was primarily a soldier unit, the Romans also used them to enact policing, labor, and peacekeeping within their civilization, most notably Hadrian’s Wall, a monumental example of Roman engineering accomplished by just three legions stationed in that area. The legionary would wear full armor, equipped with the Roman standard scutum, two javelins, and a gladius. Ideally, the legionaries would use javelins at range as they approach the enemy army, these javelins serve to destroy or disable the enemy shields, making them vulnerable to the following attacks. The Roman scutum is the centerpiece of the Roman battle tactic, the legionaries not only use it as defensive equipment but also an offensive ram formation.
