The Curious Case of March Anniversaries
Why March Weddings were so popular
(Last Updated 12/02/2026)
Many of you - or your parents or grandparents - may have got married in the 1950s, 60s or 70s. Interestingly, March weddings were especially common back then, and there’s a surprisingly practical reason: tax!
Under the old UK tax system, getting married before the end of the financial year (5th April) could mean a married man qualified for the married man’s tax allowance for that year - even if the wedding was only weeks before year-end. So plenty of couples chose to tie the knot in March.
This incentive disappeared in the late 1960s, and after that, weddings quickly shifted toward late summer - for much more obvious reasons.
But if you know someone from that era celebrating a March anniversary, we’ve got a great selection of unique, traditional and meaningful gifts.
And what could be better than bronze? Made from copper and tin, it’s a perfect symbol that two metals - like two people - can become something stronger together.
