A gladiator is a combatant who fought in the fighting arena during the Age of Rome, named after gladius, the popular sword style at the time. Gladiators are often drafted from criminals, war prisoners, or sometimes volunteers who risked their lives by competing in the arena. Gladiator games were advertised well beforehand, like a theater performance or sports event during modern times. As the games grew larger and more popular, open spaces such as the Rome Colosseum were adapted as venues, with elevated seating for the patrons and spectators.
