Coatlicue, the skirt of snakes, also known as the Mother of the Gods, is the Aztec goddess who gave birth to the moon, stars, and the mother of the war god Huitzilopochtli. She is the Goddess of fertility, patron god of life and death, and the guide of rebirth. Coatlicue is depicted as a woman figure with claws as feet and hands, wearing a skirt made of multiple snakes, a necklace made of human hands, hearts, and skulls. According to Aztec legend, Coatlicue was sacrificed during the beginning of the present creation, and two serpents of blood sprouted from her beheaded body to create her new face.
